Safe Removal of Mercury Amalgam PDF Print E-mail

Various opinions exist on the protocol to follow when removing dental mercury amalgam fillings safely.  After many years of removing mercury amalgams safely, Cape Town Smile Studios are seen as the leaders in this field. Dr Visser regularly teaches other dentists safe amalgam removal protocols.

When having amalgam fillings removed at Cape Town Smile Studios, we endeavour to work with the referral practitioners. These can be Integrative Health Care Practitioners (medical doctors with special interest in complimentary medicine), Homeopaths, Naturopaths, Oncologists, etc.

Although each referral practitioner has his / her own set of protocols to which we abide, some basic steps are taken during the removal process.

  1. Each patient is supplied with oxygen to prevent the inhalation of mercury vapours during the removal process.
  2. We prefer to remove all amalgams during one visit while the patient is under conscious sedation. The benefits of this are numerous.
    1. The immune system is only attacked once.
    2. Fillings on both sides of the mouth can be removed at the same time, since the brain is sedated.
    3. Patients receive a Vitamin C IV (enhanced with other supplements) as Vit C is a very potent anti-oxidant, and provides electrons to the mercury molecules, which prevent them from binding to the cells in the body.
    4. As we see a lot of out-of-town and out-of-country patients, time is short, and we need to do as much as possible during their visits. Some theories exist on removing amalgams one by one. Our experience has shown this to be the most dangerous form of protocol to use.
  3. External suction is used in front of the mouth.
  4. A special suction tip is used over the tooth. This catches all the mercury debris, preventing it from being swallowed. We believe this to be more effective than the traditional rubber dam that fitted over the tooth. (Ask us why!)
  5. A lip protector (rubber dam) is used.

These are just some of the preventative measures we use.

Please note: It is very important that the patient's immune system and adrenals are strong enough to have even ONE amalgam removed. If we deem the patient to not be in good enough health to have an amalgam removed, the patient is referred back to his / her referral doctor, or to one of our team of referrals for treatment prior to having any amalgams removed. At this stage, only emergency dental work will be done.
